AN AEGDM CASE STUDY

“This Is It” and The Michael Jackson Tribute

As the world was mourning the sudden loss of Michael Jackson, AEG Digital Media went to work behind the scenes to help produce a series of stirring tributes to the King of Pop.

The company mounted an unprecedented audio and video data recovery effort, locating all film-quality footage and tracks of the late icon with an equal mix of speed and precision.

Working around the clock, AEG Digital Media then assembled the first cut of what would become “This Is It.” Potential buyers screened the film at AEGDM’s broadcast operations center, which served as the first production home for the movie.

Soon after those initial screenings, Sony Pictures acquired, finished and released “This Is It.”

On October 27, 2009, AEG Digital Media served as a production partner for the world premiere of “This Is It.” The company enabled production of the event on the LA LIVE campus, and helped bring the experience live to Web sites and movie theaters around the world. AEGDM also facilitated the press pool feed of the premiere for both traditional broadcast and Internet media.

Separately, AEG Digital Media played a vital role in The Michael Jackson Tribute, helping to facilitate worldwide distribution of that broadcast on July 7, 2009. It is estimated that over 1 billion people watched the memorial service around the globe.

“Michael Jackson was a singular artist and a once-in-a-generation talent, and his passing saddened us all,” says Michael Goldfine, President, AEG Digital Media. “We were asked to provide creative services in a fast-moving situation that called for many of our technical and digital capabilities.”

Goldfine adds, “Because of our multi-faceted product offering, we ended up having a major hand in all of the Michael Jackson tribute productions. This was a worldwide cultural event that served as a significant test for AEG Digital Media – one we definitely passed.”
